Class 8 Projects - Old Scholars Mentor

Each year, Class 8 students take on an independent project, learning a new skill of their choosing over six months — it could be almost anything, something they have been inspired by or are genuinely interested in.

The following subjects were covered this year: photography, animation, portraiture, upcycling, 3D modelling, making lampshades, printmaking, natural horsemanship, pottery, macrophotography, welding, ice skating, fashion design, music promotion, architecture, hairdressing, parkour, raising chickens, Zen pond building, climbing, computer coding, and building an electric guitar.

The project may involve lessons, mentoring or materials, and includes planning and bookwork: tracking progress, writing about their subject — interviews, information, thoughts and reflections, drawings and diagrams.

This year, three of the mentors were Old Scholars

Thackery Davis (class of 1988), woodwork teacher and guardian to Class 12, helped Sol build his guitar.
Jim Pople (class of 1998) worked with Lani on her architecture project. Jim's business today: www.popleassociates.co.uk
Robin Brown (class of 1998) taught Romeo welding. Today Robin is a Director at Tablehurst Farm: www.tablehurstfarm.org.uk

One current student, Elliott Jones in Class 11, was a mentor to Pablo for his parkour project.

After months of sustained effort, each student took to the stage and spoke with confidence and eloquence about their process and achievements — an accomplishment that required real courage and composure.

Their presentations reflected not only the depth of their learning but also their growing independence and self-confidence.

Projects are assessed and students receive a CFI Level 2 Qualification - a GCSE-equivalent credit - in recognition of their achievement.

As an Old Scholar, if you have a skill and would be interested in being a mentor for these projects, please get in touch: [email protected]
