Funds raised at the Advent Fair

Though the Advent Fair now feels like a distant memory, we have been quietly busy, returning your generosity to the heart of our school. In past years the funds raised at the Fair have played a significant part in nourished our ongoing library project; this year we listened to the needs of our classrooms and chose to invest in the hands-on crafts. After careful thought we decided our venerable kiln—more than thirty years old—and our sewing machines would greatly benefit from gentle renewal. This is only the beginning of showing how funds raised are used and we are delighted to share the completion of these two projects.  Larger projects in the past, such as the Library refurbishment, have had longer time frames for completion and it is our intention in subsequent years to use the bulk of the funds raised at Advent for projects within the year. Any residual funds will be held for the next projects selected and also help improve equipment and facilities in the Fair the following year.

Our warmest thanks to everyone—parents, alumni and staff alike; every penny makes a real difference. Below you will find some photographs and kind words from the teachers.

Pottery Kiln

We are very excited to have our new electric kiln in the pottery classroom. Our previous kiln, which was around 30 years old, had reached the end of its life. One of the biggest challenges we faced was removing the old kiln from the firing room and installing the new one. This was carried out by specialist kiln removal professionals, as each kiln weighs more than 350 kilograms and had to be carefully manoeuvred through narrow doorways and a set of stairs.

The new kiln will make a great difference, allowing for more reliable and consistent firings. We are looking forward to exploring new techniques and expanding the creative possibilities for our students. Thank you to everyone who supported this project through the Advent Fair fundraising— your contribution will have a lasting impact on the Art and Craft Department.

Sewing Machines

After many years' service our electric sewing machines were in much need of an update, so we were delighted to receive the funding from the Advent Fair to buy 8 new ones! This term Class 8 will be using them to make an item of clothing from a pattern, the last step in their middle school Handwork journey.
