Class 4AD Camp

As part of their Local Geography Main Lesson, the class spent two days camping on the school grounds last week, using the familiar landscape around them as a focus for closer observation and exploration.
The children set up camp at the Stone Circle where they collected firewood, filled water butts and prepared their tents. From there, they explored the Mansion and its surroundings, looking out over the school grounds from different viewpoints.
They also explored the Mansion itself, hearing stories about its history before spending time sketching and writing about what they had observed.
On Friday, after breakfast and packing up camp, the class set off across the school grounds and into the Ashdown Forest. They followed a tributary of the Kid, almost to its source, stopping along the way to observe the landscape and play games.
The camp gave the children a different way of experiencing a landscape they know well, while also providing plenty of opportunities for practical work and observation for their Main Lesson.
It was also a good opportunity for the class to spend time together outside the usual school routine, as they settle into the new school year.
