Celebrating Class 8 projects

Our Class 9 students are proudly celebrating their Crossfields Level 2 Awards, formally recognising the creativity, dedication, and independent learning they demonstrated in their Class 8 projects.

Michael Hall Students Celebrate Crossfields Level 2 Awards

We are delighted to share that our Class 9 students have received their Crossfields Institute Level 2 Integrated Education Awards for the independent projects they completed last year in Class 8.

These certificates formally recognise the depth of creativity, commitment, and independent learning that goes into the Class 8 projects, which has long been a hallmark of the Michael Hall curriculum and are the equivalent to a GCSE.

“The Class 8 projects at Michael Hall have always been a deeply impressive milestone in the pupils' educational journey. They showcase these young people’s individuality, diverse talents, and ability to direct their own learning.

As a parent, I’m thrilled that the huge effort that goes into these projects is now formally recognised as an Ofqual Level 2 qualification, equal to a GCSE.

These projects can be challenging at times (as most really important things are!), but what they get out of them is immense — from time management to creative problem-solving. The final presentations are always an absolute triumph. It’s only right that, alongside a huge sense of achievement, students now receive formal recognition of all their hard work.”

— Alistair Whitby, parent of children in Classes 6 and 9

About the Qualification

Michael Hall is now offering the Crossfields Institute (CFI) Level 2 Integrated Education qualification.

Last year, Class 8 completed the Award (one module) through their Independent Projects. This year, all of Class 9 are enrolled in working towards the Certificate (three modules- one already completed), which includes:

  • Creative Thinking Skills
  • Personal and Social Learning Skills

This Level 2 qualification is equivalent in level to GCSEs and is regulated by Ofqual and aligned with the European Qualifications Framework (EQF).

Assessment is through a portfolio of evidence, rather than a single exam. This allows students to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and creativity in a broad and authentic way — through written work, artwork, photography, presentations, and more.

Internal Quality Assurers (IQAs) at Michael Hall verify all assessments, and Crossfields’ own External Quality Assurers (EQAs) oversee the process to ensure consistency and rigour.

Recognising the Whole Child

The Crossfields qualification was designed to develop autonomous learners with intellectual rigour, creativity, and social responsibility. It values the journey of learning as much as the outcome, encouraging students to refine and improve their work throughout the year.

This approach recognises that traditional exams do not always capture the full picture of a student’s abilities. The programme’s “low floor, high ceiling” design makes it accessible to all learners while still offering depth and challenge.

As an integrative qualification, it engages the whole person — head, heart and hands — combining subject areas and connecting learning to real life in meaningful ways.

“This qualification meets the needs of the modern-day child, going into the future workplace whilst recognising the different learning styles, neurodiversity, and academic brilliance of our current students.”

— Rachel Gatehouse, Class 7 teacher and Internal Quality Assurer (IQA), Michael Hall

Looking Ahead

Michael Hall plans to expand the programme further in the coming years, adding modules in Performing Arts, Craft, and Art & Movement — offering formal accreditation for the breadth and richness already embedded in the Waldorf curriculum.

This new chapter recognises not only our students’ achievements but also the enduring value of an education that nurtures creativity, confidence, and purpose.
