Italy Trip 1973

Italy Trip – 14th to 30th July 1973

As this year's Class 12 have their last week in Italy, this feels like just the right time to share this report from 1973.

Andrew Finnemore, a parent on parking duty, got talking with Old Scholar Dede Liss at the 2023 Midsummer Festival, she was returning for her 50-year reunion as part of the Class of 1973. Several emails later, Andrew had a series of photographs of their typewritten Italy trip report. After much straightening, cropping, brightness adjusting, and page reordering, the document was transformed into a complete and readable digital form — and shared with the Class of 2023 before their own Italy trip. Note it's in 3 parts - download below.

It is a fabulous read, opening a window into history with many humorous anecdotes, as well as the day-to-day 'normal' of the time. Each section was written by a different student, giving it a range of styles and voices — a lovely reflection of how our use of the English language has changed over the years.

Having completed the Italy trip myself in 1993, I'm not sure much has really changed though. I'm curious as to what our Class of 2026 thinks!
