A Little Extra Warmth in Saplings

As the seasons gently shift and we begin to prepare for the colder winter months, we have been thinking about the importance of warmth in Willow Tree Saplings.

In our Early Childhood setting, warmth is something we nurture in many ways: through the cosy layers we wear, the nourishing snacks we make and share, and the calm, comforting rhythms that help the children feel safe and settled as they settle into a home-away-from-home setting.

As part of our daily rhythm, each day, following our warm snack, the children enjoy a quiet time of rest. With pillows and covered in woollen blankets, curtains drawn they relax as they listen to a gentle story or soothing music. A much needed break from the busy and social experience of the day. A time to connect with themselves and breathe in.

To bring an extra layer of comfort to these peaceful moments, we have begun making little weighted beanbags. Once gently warmed on the radiators, we hope these little bags will offer a comforting sensory experience for the children to enjoy during rest time, helping to create a cosy and nurturing atmosphere as the weather grows colder as a safe alternative to hot water bottles.

At our Parents’ Evening, we also spent time reflecting on the theme of Warmth and how we can nurture both the physical and emotional warmth of our youngest children. Parents had the opportunity to join in by having a go at filling some of the bags with beans. It was a lovely, practical way to share in our preparations for the colder months ahead. Feeling warm, held and cared for is such an important part of helping children feel safe, secure and connected.

We hope these little bags of warmth will bring an added touch of comfort to our Saplings children in the months ahead, as we embrace the quieter rhythms of the coming winter season.
