Online Safety Talk: A Warm and Thoughtful Gathering

Last Friday, our canteen was filled with sunshine, conversation, and a shared commitment to keeping our children safe in an ever-evolving digital world. We were delighted to welcome around twenty parents from across the school—Kindergarten, Lower, Middle, and Upper School—for our Online Safety Talk.

The atmosphere was relaxed and open, creating space for meaningful discussion about what safeguarding and online safety look like within a Waldorf setting. With screens and technology becoming an increasingly present part of young people’s lives, the morning offered an opportunity to reflect together on how we guide and support children in developing safe, balanced, and thoughtful relationships with the digital world.

We were fortunate to be joined by Emmeline Hawker, trustee and former Acting Principal, whose depth of experience and insight helped shape a rich and reflective conversation. Alongside her, Pierce McNulty, our IT teacher, shared valuable perspectives on the practical realities of online safety and the role education plays in equipping students with the knowledge and resilience they need.

Discussions touched on the development of our PSHE curriculum, particularly how and why online safety is introduced at different stages of a child’s journey through the school. Parents engaged thoughtfully with these ideas, sharing their own experiences and questions, and contributing to a dialogue that felt both supportive and constructive.

The feedback from those who attended was overwhelmingly positive. Parents valued the opportunity to come together, to listen, to ask questions, and to explore this important aspect of safeguarding as a community.

Events like this remind us of the strength of partnership between school and home. Safeguarding is not something that happens in isolation—it grows through connection, communication, and shared understanding.

We look forward to continuing these conversations in the future.
