Alfie joins La Bohème at Glyndebourne

When the opportunity arose to take part in a professional production at one of the world’s leading opera houses, Alfie, one of our Class 6 students didn’t hesitate. “I had heard that Glyndebourne was a world-leading opera house and thought it would be fun to be part of a professional production,” he said.

And what an experience it has been so far. From singing alongside a full orchestra to auditioning for a solo line, every moment has been filled with excitement. “There have been so many exciting moments! Singing with the orchestra, auditioning for my solo line... but I suppose the first time on stage with an audience of around 800 for the dress rehearsal was a standout moment — looking out and seeing a sea of faces!”

The production — Puccini’s La bohème — is known for its beauty and emotional depth, and the experience has offered plenty of learning opportunities too. “I’ve learned how to sing opera — and in Italian! I was given the children’s solo line in the opera, ‘Vola, Tromba, un cavallin,’ which means ‘I would like a trumpet and a little horse.’ I’m also hoping to complete my Bronze Arts Award as part of my time at Glyndebourne.”

We’re so proud of this remarkable achievement and can’t wait to see Alfie perform on one of the most celebrated stages in the country!

Puccini’s devastatingly beautiful tragedy, La bohème, opens on Saturday 11 October and runs until 2 November. You can explore a selection of photos from rehearsals — featuring the Glyndebourne Chorus and Glyndebourne Youth Opera — here.
