Friday Flyer - 26th June 2026

Dear Michael Hall Community,

I hope that everyone has been coping well with the heat. I know that in other places in the world these temperatures would not cause the disruption it does here, but we are just not built for it in the UK. But with this feature maybe becoming our normal, we will need to investigate ways to moderate our indoor temperatures.

Before I started the academic year, I was told how busy the last part of the school year is. But, experiencing it now suggests that my colleagues are either masters of the understatement or didn’t want to scare me off!

It has been a series of late nights, longer workweeks and intensely focused days here at Michael Hall. There are so many thanks that need to go out to colleagues, parents, former parents, former teachers, former pupils, current pupils and community contributors that I really could not list you all. Thank you to all those who have contributed to talks, midsummer, musical, Olympics, Old Scholar gatherings, graduation events and fundraising events. It is greatly appreciated and the value that it has for our pupils to see the elders around them working together for them is enriching and empowering. They are imbued in a sense of community and purpose; a powerful combination.

What has come through strongly this year, perhaps more so recently with our Class 12 pupils going through the leaving process, is the importance of rituals and rites.I have written previously about crossing thresholds and how we mark them in our school in quite specific ways. But I have not addressed them in a bonding and cultivation manner.

Through morning verses, songs, and age-appropriate ceremonies, our pupils experience a sense of belonging that nurtures both security and identity. These recurring moments provide continuity, allowing each child to feel part of something greater than themselves. This is done while recognising their own unique place within the class community, held and led by the class teacher or guardian.

As each class journeys together through the years, these shared experiences become woven into the fabric of their collective story. Whether marking the changing seasons, celebrating milestones, or participating in class traditions (a birthday cake knife for Mrs Courtenay’s graduating group) that are unique to their class, pupils build memories that strengthen relationships and foster mutual respect. These rites of passage encourage children to support one another through moments of challenge, celebration, and growth, creating a culture in which every individual is seen, valued, and encouraged by their peers.

The power of these rituals lies not only in the moments themselves but in the deep sense of community they cultivate over time. They remind children that learning is a shared human experience and that they belong to a community that celebrates, reflects, and grows together. In a world that feels fast-paced and fragmented, our Waldorf education offers children the gift of meaningful traditions that create lasting bonds, helping each class become not simply a group of pupils, but a community that carries its shared experiences with them long after they leave school.

Thank you to Class 12 pupils who shared with me how important they thought these rituals were to them, and how much they will hold this as they move through their lives. Also, thank you for sharing this so personally in the graduation ceremony.

I look forward to seeing those coming to the Olympics on Saturday, joining us in a strongly embedded Michael Hall ritual of events.

Warm wishes,

Stuart

Instrumental Lesson Application Forms

As we approach the end of the summer term we are now accepting final instrumental application forms for a start in September 2026; Class 2 have just had a wonderful String Experience in their main lesson -a vivid introduction to playing the Violin along with two other string options that are suitable for Class 3 pupils at Michael Hall. We are indebted to our violin Teacher Nicoline Kraamwinkel for weaving her magic over the project and giving the pupils such a rich experience.  Classes 3 have had an introduction to the brass instruments along with the wind instruments, also with huge thanks to our Visiting Music Teachers; these along with piano are offered from Class 4 and upwards. To provide some encouragement please do take a read of the following article - 25 science-backed reasons for learning an instrument;  https://musicalpursuits.com/benefits-of-learning-an-instrument/

Should you wish to apply for your child to learn a musical instrument at Michael Hall please submit an application form no later than the 3rd July or please email our Instrumental Tuition Coordinator, Rachel Masters [email protected]. In addition to all the detailed instrumental information you will find the relevant documentation, application and hire forms here: Music

Kidbrook Park Music Festival

The Kidbrooke Park Music Festival is back again in the Autumn term, and will take place on the weekend of 24th and 25th October. Please note that this is the first weekend of the autumn half term, not the last weekend as usual. This is to avoid a clash with Halloween. Keep the dates free! As ever, it promises to be a memorable weekend of incredible concerts.

We are inviting young musicians from Michael Hall and the wider community to form this year’s Festival Youth Orchestra and work with a group of professional musicians from the Philharmonia Orchestra. This year we are programming the beautiful and exhilarating Capriol Suite by Warlock, especially arranged to include as many instrumentalists as possible. As in previous projects, there will be parts for all orchestral instruments, at all levels from grade 1 to 8 and above. Violin, viola, cello, bass, clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon, harp (both lever and pedal), and all brass instruments are welcome, as well as percussion players.

The young musicians will need to learn their parts with their instrumental teachers well in advance so they can take full advantage of this wonderful opportunity. It allows them to both learn from and be inspired by the professional musicians around them. We are therefore opening the applications from June 8 so that the students have plenty of time to prepare their parts.

Dates are as follows:

Rehearsal 1 - Friday 23rd October 2025: 10am - 1pm,  in the Dick Chester Studio at Michael Hall.

Rehearsal 2 - Sunday 25th October: 10 - 11:30am

Concert - Sunday 25th October: 3pm

We very much look forward to welcoming your son/daughter to the Youth Orchestra for this exciting project. Please fill in the application form - here - and return via email to [email protected], or via Michael Hall School Reception in a clearly marked envelope to KP Music Festival, Music Department.

We ask for a contribution of £20 towards costs for each young musician. This includes their free ticket to the rest of the concert. We do have a modest KP Festival Bursary for those that would like financial support. Please tick the box on the application form if you would like to be considered for this.

Blossom Fund

Ways to Contribute

If you feel you can help support the Blossom Fund, there are several ways you can give:

  • One-off donations
  • Standing orders
  • Online contributions via our website
  • Legacy gifts
  • We are also exploring how charitable donations!

Donate Here

Every gift, large or small, will directly help open the doors of a Waldorf education to more children. To put some context, if we had 10 people donating £20 per month, that equates to 10% of a child's fees that we could support.

If you would like to find out more on how to donate, please email [email protected] or contact me directly.
