Friday Flyer - 11th September 2026

Dear Michael Hall Community,

Welcome back to the new academic year!

I hope that everyone has had a wonderful summer, enjoying not only good weather and travels, but also some great family time as well.

Thank you to everyone who has asked about my summer break. The 10 days I had with my wife in Portugal were very restful – and very much needed after the busy summer term.

The start of any new year is always fascinating as we welcome older (and taller) versions of familiar faces, as well as welcome brand-new faces join us from different places from across the UK, and across the globe.

In school we have been preparing the school and preparing ourselves for the new rhythms and cycles which we will be working within. Taking the time to allow our existing pupils to arrive to us with a newer version of themselves, as well as holding them in a cherished way that recognises the longstanding relationship has very much been part of the conversations. Developmentally we have good guidance from our pedagogical guides, but the individual has to always be seen and met within that big picture.

The biggest rhythm change has been a shift to one lunch time for all pupils. This creates a wonderful opportunity for classes 6 to 12 to mix and mingle, building bridges across the school sections. Day one has been wonderful to see as everyone has mixed and played in a harmonious fashion.

It is the start of the Jewish new year, Rosh Hoshana, so I wish all of those marking the start of a new year blessings for the year ahead. I hope that the year brings good health and happiness.

I look forward to writing next week to share the events and musings of our first full week back as a whole school.

Have a lovely weekend.

Warm wishes,

Stuart

Supporting Nepal

Many of you will have seen the deeply distressing news of the devastating flash floods in Nepal and the border region with Tibet, with tragic loss of life and many people still missing.

As an international community, the connections within Michael Hall reach far beyond Forest Row. Events such as these can feel much closer to home than geography might suggest. We know there are members of our wider school community with connections to the region, and we are grateful to hear that those known to us are safe and supporting others affected by the disaster.

We hold in our thoughts and prayers all those affected — those who have lost loved ones, those still waiting for news, and the communities facing the difficult aftermath of the floods.

For those who would like to offer practical support please look up established organisations supporting the emergency and humanitarian response: Doctors for Nepal, Médecins Sans Frontières (https://msf.org.uk/article/nepal-floods-what-msf-doing-and-how-can-i-help) and the British Red Cross (https://donate.redcross.org.uk/appeal/nepal-floods).

Dr. Kate Yarrow, from Doctors for Nepal has said she is so grateful to us for our support of DFN.

https://doctorsfornepal.org/emergency-appeal-nepal-flash-floods/

At times such as these, we are reminded of our shared humanity and the importance of standing alongside communities facing profound loss and uncertainty.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected.

Kidbrook Park Music Festival

Dear Parents,

A very warm welcome to the new school year from the Music Department. We are all looking forward to a music filled school year and as ever, are hitting the ground running. The brilliant Kidbrooke Park Music Festival is only just around the corner with superb concerts by international musicians on 24th and 25th October. Do check the website at kpmusicfestival.org

If you haven't signed your child(ren) up yet for the fantastic KP Festival Youth Orchestra there is still time. We are performing the beautiful 'Capriol Suite' by Peter Warlock with parts for every orchestra instrument, from roughly Grade 1 level to Grade 8 and beyond. This year the Youth Orchestra will be playing alongside a group of cellists from London's exceptional Philharmonia Orchestra. We are so looking forward to hearing them perform and to joining them on stage. The details and application form are on the website under the KPFestival Youth Orchestra tab. Do fill it in and send it to [email protected] at your earliest convenience.

Let's give our children the chance to make beautiful music, build confidence and be part of something truly exciting!

A week before the Midsummer Festival, Noel Hamel (Class of 1961) emailed asking about a chair he had made, and whether he could come and take photographs of it. Noel had made the chair over 20 years ago and I'll admit I was a little worried about where it might have got to! But sure enough, afte...

Blossom Fund

Ways to Contribute

If you feel you can help support the Blossom Fund, there are several ways you can give:

  • One-off donations
  • Standing orders
  • Online contributions via our website
  • Legacy gifts
  • We are also exploring how charitable donations!

Donate Here

Every gift, large or small, will directly help open the doors of a Waldorf education to more children. To put some context, if we had 10 people donating £20 per month, that equates to 10% of a child's fees that we could support.

If you would like to find out more on how to donate, please email [email protected] or contact me directly.
