Friday Flyer - 12th June 2026
Dear Michael Hall Community,
I cannot believe that we are now in mid June....and seemingly neither can the weather.
Before I share what I have been mulling over this week, there have been several school achievements over the past few weeks which I would like to highlight:
-
A 5 star rating has been achieved by the Early Childhood Faculty during a recent environmental health inspection. This certifies the food preparation and hygiene is of the highest standard possible. Our previous rating was a sturdy 3, so jumping up to a 5 indicates a real effort by Emily and the Early Childhood team.
-
Darshan has secured a recertification of our biodynamic credentials in the Market and School Gardens. This requires quite meticulous record keeping to show that practices are maintaining the integrity of the soil, seeds and produce. Thank you Darshan for your continuous dedication to the garden and school.
-
We had a safeguarding audit in the last week before half term. This was an arranged day of thorough investigation into our safeguarding paperwork, practices and impact on pupils, alongside a deep dive into how we practice safer recruitment and manage any allegations which come up in school. Thanks to the leadership of this by Rebecca Lidert, the delivery and enaction of policies and planning by our teachers, and the feedback from pupils, we received an excellent report. Thank you also to Eva Harrell-Toth from our HR team who manages our statutory staff documentation.
I have been reflecting on the challenges of growth and change which face us. My mind has been really drawn not specifically to the person who is making the effort to change and grow but rather looking at how much space or ‘permission’ is required from those around them that allows and supports that growth and development.
Michael Hall is a beautiful, old institution. There are thousands of Old Scholars, Old Scholars’ parents, teachers, support staff, and community connections. With this rich and proud history comes a series of histories and related expectations; some very positive and some not so. The challenge of change as a community school like ours is immense as we need ‘permission’ to do so.
Our wonderful Waldorf education is founded on a deep understanding that human beings are continually unfolding. We describe child development as a journey of transformation, with each stage bringing new capacities, new questions, and new ways of relating to the world. Education, therefore, is not about moulding a child into a predetermined shape, but about creating the conditions in which their unique potential can emerge.
I wonder if apply this as we continue our journey into adulthood? If we recognise that no journey through life is complete, how do we support the conditions in which the unique potential for all of those working at Michael Hall to emerge? How do we allow the institution to organically grow with new blossoms and fruits?
Much of this is rhetorical of course and requires some internal work, and in many cases a deep reflection. What I would love to feel for everyone that is working at Michael Hall is that the wrongs of the past are not held in a manner that inhibits the growth of the future. We need permission from all of our community members to firmly plant ourselves in this new century of Michael Hall: to make decisions based on what our pupils need now, to be responsible for what we do now, to take every opportunity as a new chance to get it right now, to be the people that Michael Hall need us to be right her and right now.
June is a busy month! I am looking forward to welcoming you all to the school for the Summer Fair, the Class 5 Olympics and the Musical over the next few weeks. I will thank those who are voluntarily supporting us in these events as without your goodwill, positivity and time, we could not run so many events and experiences for our pupils.
As a sports fan I could not leave the start of the World Cup unmentioned. As a Scotland fan I approach the world cup trying to leave the scars from the past behind, leaving us open to a bright future which is not tainted by events such as losing 1-0 to Costa Rica in 1990 (more internal work needed!). Good luck to the many nations being supported by our community in this global event....but mostly to Scotland!
Warm wishes,
Stuart

Devices for SEND students at Michael Hall
|
|
Following on from the internet safety cafe, we have had some questions regarding the use of technology for SEND students. We feel it is important to make the distinction between our commitment to keeping our lower school classrooms 'tech free' with no introduction of interactive whiteboards, ipads, or other connected devices and the need for some dyslexic children to be allowed a non-connected keyboard and screen to be able to write at the level they need to, which we do support. It is also our duty to allow reasonable adjustments to our provision under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and the Equality Act 2010. Much like we have electric lights to keep the classrooms light, keyboards are a basic tool for individual students to use on occasions as needed and are not part of how our teachers deliver lessons in lower school.

Dear Michael Hall Community,
In the 101st year of Michael Hall Waldorf School, I am pleased to announce the formation of a new group – the Old Scholars’ Parents Group.
As I hope you are all aware, graduates and former attendees of Michael Hall are called Old Scholars. This is a unique title which creates a sense of belonging and connection, and that is far more personal than just the generic ‘alumni’.
Whilst there is a special connection to the school for former pupils, we cannot forget that in our school, our parents contribute with passion, dedication and care (not to mention the fees!). I have not worked in a school where parents cook, bake, decorate, sell, fundraise, arrange, attend, and invest themselves as much as they do here – thank you for all that you do and have done.
Our parent body plays such an important role in making our school community the warm and vibrant one that it is. What the Old Scholars’ Parents Group will do is keep that connection alive after pupils leave. After possibly 16/17 years of being part of Michael Hall, as children move through the school, graduation or leaving the school can feel like a loss; this is particularly strong when the last child of a family leaves. I want us to stay connected, to attend events, to see the performances, to reminisce, to continue to support, and I want all of our Old Scholars’ Parents to feel welcome.
The official launch for the Old Scholars’ Parents Group will be on June 20th at the Midsummer Fair. Ami Nielsen (current parent) will be hosting the welcomes and collecting everyone’s details on the lawn at the front of the Mansion, not too far from the Old Scholar Reunions and the school merchandise stall. I cannot think of a more apt time to launch the group as the Midsummer Fair is such a well loved and well attended event in our annual calendar.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming events, and to seeing all Old Scholars’ Parents at the welcoming gazebo with Ami at the launch on the 20th of June, 1pm!
Warm wishes,
Stuart McWilliams, Principal

Ways to Contribute
If you feel you can help support the Blossom Fund, there are several ways you can give:
- One-off donations
- Standing orders
- Online contributions via our website
- Legacy gifts
- We are also exploring how charitable donations!
Donate Here
Every gift, large or small, will directly help open the doors of a Waldorf education to more children. To put some context, if we had 10 people donating £20 per month, that equates to 10% of a child's fees that we could support.
If you would like to find out more on how to donate, please email [email protected] or contact me directly.
