Friday Flyer - 27th February 2026

Dear Michael Hall Community,

As it is a time of performance, I have been thinking about the role that performing plays in our school, with comparisons to how other schools create these opportunities for their pupils.

In Michael Hall School, performance is not an “extra.” It is an essential strand of our curriculum, woven carefully through the years to support the healthy development of the child. From the earliest class plays in the lower school, where children tentatively find their voices in rhyme and rhythm, to the more complex dramatic productions of the upper school, performance living, an expression of learning made visible.

Drama in our setting nurtures far more than theatrical skill. It cultivates courage, collaboration, empathy and resilience. When a child steps into a role, they must listen deeply, inhabit another perspective and work in harmony with others. They learn discipline through rehearsal, responsibility through commitment, and confidence through overcoming nerves. The stage becomes a place where intellectual understanding meets emotional intelligence and physical presence; where head, heart and hands work as one.

One of the most significant milestones in this journey is the Class 12 play. This is far more than a production; it is a rite of passage. As our eldest students stand on the threshold of adulthood, they are asked to take full ownership of a demanding piece. The process requires maturity, self-management and ensemble spirit. It is often the moment when students surprise themselves, discovering new strengths, deeper insights and a profound sense of accomplishment. For many, it is a defining memory of their time at school.

This year, our Class 12 students are proud to present Animal Farm by George Orwell. This powerful and thought-provoking work offers rich opportunities for artistic exploration and social reflection. Through its allegorical storytelling, students grapple with themes of power, responsibility, idealism and corruption; themes that feel as relevant today as ever. The depth and complexity of this text make it a fitting challenge for our graduating class, demanding nuance, emotional range and strong ensemble work.

We warmly invite our whole community to come and support this important milestone. There are still a limited number of tickets available for sale, and we would be delighted to see a full audience as our Class 12 students step into this culminating experience of their Michael Hall education.

I will be enjoying the show this evening and look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible.

Warm wishes,

Stuart

James Kilfiger's Visit to Brighton University PGCE students

Earlier this term, I was invited to speak at Brighton University to students working toward their Mathematics Teaching qualification. The session focused on alternative career pathways. I was introducing the Waldorf mathematics curriculum and how it differs from the approaches typically used in mainstream schools.

The students — who came from a wide range of backgrounds and countries — were deeply engaged and curious about our methods. They asked thoughtful questions about how the Waldorf curriculum supports young people not only academically but in their wider development beyond school life.

It was heartening to see such interest from the next generation of educators, and several students even expressed an intention to visit Michael Hall as part of their course. Opportunities like this help strengthen our outreach and build meaningful connections with teacher‑training institutions, offering insight into the value and relevance of Waldorf education today.

Kindergarten Gardening

On the frosty but sunny Monday in half term, our principal, Stuart McWilliams, gave up another holiday day to drive from London to help me, Sally Schweizer, in the kindergarten garden again. Soon after Stuart left for home, the heavens opened with an almighty bang so his car got washed but at least it was dry when we were toiling! There is still a lot to do so we had to leave the rest after several hours’ work but we hope to continue soon with some more willing hands.

Garden News

New life is emerging in the market garden!

Seeds of lettuce, onion, leek, chilli, aubergine, tomatoes, and herbs have started to grow, with a little assistance from a heated propagator. These seeds germinate from around 10oC-30oC and need a good source of light as soon as the leaves emerge. Too much heat and not enough light will make leaves and stems become root-like. We must also keep the plant well-watered and aired as too much humidity can encourage disease and algae growth.

Great biodynamic produce will be available from our walled garden from May. Join our WhatsApp group through this invitation link:

Blossom Fund

Ways to Contribute

If you feel you can help support the Blossom Fund, there are several ways you can give:

  • One-off donations
  • Standing orders
  • Online contributions via our website
  • Legacy gifts
  • We are also exploring how charitable donations!

Donate Here

Every gift, large or small, will directly help open the doors of a Waldorf education to more children. To put some context, if we had 10 people donating £20 per month, that equates to 10% of a child's fees that we could support.

If you would like to find out more on how to donate, please email [email protected] or contact me directly.
