Friday Flyer - 25th April 2025

Dear Michael Hall Community

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter. We were welcomed back in the assembly to the lovely sight of fresh wheat grass which was sown as seed before the holidays, signalling the rebirth and new hope of this season and also the new phase of Michael Hall as we transition into the beginning of a fresh new 100 years.

We're finally at the Summer Term, the term filled with so many favourite events such as the May Festival (which is next week), the Olympics and the Midsummer Festival. Before that is the exam season and I'm wishing all our students in Classes 10 and 12 the very best for their revision. The student study rooms are currently filled with earnest work at the moment. The sounds we are hearing are of the birds doing their earnest Spring/Summer work and the smells are of the delicious food coming from Lee and his team in the canteen.

Wishing you all a fresh and warm weekend.

With warm regards,

Emmeline Hawker
Acting Principal

Here's a photo of garlic planted in November and freshly planted Hannibal Leeks.

Big Garlic bulbs can be hard to grow. Here's some key principles-

Sun
Water
Weed free
Enough space to grow

The right balance of fertility, too much can favour leaf formation over quality bulbs.

We have an alium leaf miner pest that will damage and distort onions, leeks and garlic. To manage this I cover them with a protective net in March to April and August to September when the fly is laying its eggs.

Dear Alumni and Old Scholars,

Spring brings new beginnings and a sense of renewal, just like the spirit of Easter - a time for connection, reflection and growth. We recognise that this is a precious time that is best spent with family and friends and will therefore hold our next Alumni Tea & Talk morning session with Ingrid, on Saturday 17th May 2025.

Join us for a delightful morning of conversation over tea as we reflect on the past, reconnect, reminisce, share ideas, hear your suggestions and celebrate our shared history.

Thank you to all who joined us in the past! We can't wait to welcome you back for another relaxing morning tea and chat!  RSVP: [email protected]

Join us this Saturday, April 26 (5:30–9:30pm) at Forest Row Village Hall for a special double feature event launching our community composting revolution.

Film Highlight: Six Inches of Soil
An inspiring documentary following British farmers like John Cherry and Tim Ashton as they rebuild soil health and challenge industrial food systems. Featuring soil advocates Abby Rose and Nicole Masters, the film shows how regenerative practices can grow healthier food, stronger communities, and a better climate future.

Before and after the film:

Peek through microscopes at the living world in soil
Hands-on compost and soil transformation demonstrations
Live music by Keith Ellis, inspired by microbial life
Organic canapés from Seasons Wholefoods & the Artisan Forest Kitchen
Botanical drinks and kombucha from Old Tree Brewery

Tickets are still available – for the cost of a couple of coffees, enjoy an evening of food, film, and soil transformation, while helping launch Forest Row’s first community composting station.
