24th May 2024

Dear Michael Hall Community,

I had the great pleasure of attending Class 7b's production of 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' yesterday evening. Their movement-based interpretation of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's epic poem brought such joy and beauty to our theatre space and it was a serene experience to watch their movement work, created with such energy, commitment and precision, while listening to the poem's recital, so beautifully spoken. I thoroughly enjoyed this fresh take on a classic piece of literature and commend Mr Jones, Mrs vonZweibergk and the children for their achievement.

At this point in the year, with the exam season in full flow and with just one, admittedly extremely busy half term remaining of the school year, it is our responsibility as staff to reflect back on our journey since September and to consider how we begin to plan for the year ahead. This will form the basis for many of our meetings after the half term break and is an opportunity for both inner reflection, celebration of all that has been achieved, examination of areas that have presented our greatest challenges and our aspirations for our wonderful school as we continue to move forward.

We also look to you, as our parents, alumni and wider community friends, to help us in our reflections, and I hope that many of you will feel able to offer your own insights into the school's development next half term.

For now, I wish you all a peaceful and restorative Bank Holiday weekend and half term week away from school. I look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday 3rd June.

My warmest wishes,

Sarah Stokes

Following extensive work carried out among many of our classroom parent communities, and a request from parents for greater clarity around our stance as a school on mobile phones and other electronic media, I am delighted that we have been able to produce a short guide for parents on the rationale behind our continuing resistance to having these devices in school.

It seems that the greatest way in which we can protect children from the technological demands placed on them by the modern world, while recognising the importance of educating them in all aspects of online safety, is by supporting each other within our community to give them a consistent message that they do not need a mobile phone until they are older.

You can read the guidelines here or find them on our website.

Any further comments around this new document would be most welcome.

A letter from our Armenian colleagues from the Aregnazan Waldorf School

Dear Sarah Stokes, dear staff,

We are writing to convey our sincere gratitude for the invaluable opportunity to visit Michael Hall Waldorf School from April 29th to April 30th.

During our visit, we had the privilege of observing various lessons across different classes, allowing us to appreciate and compare cultural differences, educational systems, and the application of the Waldorf Method in British schools. Spending three days at the St. Michael Steiner School in London enriched our experience further.

As the first and only Waldorf school in Armenia, Aregnazan School is committed to providing holistic education to approximately 700 students, complementing the compulsory state curriculum with activities and disciplines that foster their comprehensive development.

While our faculty has benefited from professional development seminars in Kassel and Altenberg, Germany, this was our inaugural opportunity to observe lessons in an English school, known as the birthplace of the English Language. We are deeply grateful for your support of this initiative.

Throughout our history, Aregnazan School has maintained close ties with Waldorf Schools in Germany, Italy, Georgia, Norway, and Russia. We are optimistic that our visit to Michael Hall will pave the way for enhanced collaboration, cultural exchange, and shared learning experiences between our institutions.

In a world where education is paramount to addressing contemporary challenges, we are committed to leveraging our collective efforts to effect positive change. We believe that Waldorf Schools, with their holistic approach, are uniquely positioned to fulfill this mission.

Once again, we extend our heartfelt thanks for the opportunity and encouragement extended to us.

Warm regards,
Zarine and Ani

The memorial for Simon Shirley (a parent, grandparent and colleague at Michael Hall over many years) will be held at Michael Hall School (Kidbrooke Park, RH18 5JA) on Friday May 31st from 2.30pm until 6.00pm.

Here is a message from his daughters:

During the afternoon there will be a service, shared songs, recitals and readings by his family and friends to remember Simon. This will be followed by tea and cake in the Mansion.

Our Dad meant so much to many of you. We invite you all, his friends, colleagues, and former students from all countries where he taught- to join us in celebrating his life.

Everyone is welcome!

It would be helpful to get an idea of numbers, so please get in touch with us if you can come.
