8th March2024

Dear Michael Hall Community,

Throughout the entire Waldorf curriculum, storytelling plays an enormous role. It is said that Steiner called fairy tales the nourishment of the soul. The journey of story telling in our curriculum takes us from fairy tales, folktales, fables, myths, legends to stories from history. These are spoken aloud by the teachers and read in books. At this time of year, I often see parents heading up to Class plays with the students preparing stories for their families and friends. It is through this expression of our curriculum that we see a radiating nourishment and belonging within our community.

This year World Book Day, International Woman’s Day and Mother’s Day land within a few days of one another. It is interesting to consider the power and history of women’s voices in literature and what they represent. The theme of International Woman’s Day this year is “Inspire Inclusion”. One of the many ways we inspire inclusion in our school is through the books and stories we tell. With a consciousness to having a wide variety of representation both in the authors whose work we read and the books on our shelves we encourage relevance and belonging.

Wishing you an inspired weekend ahead celebrating those who have nourished you and yours,

Rachel Ford Blanchard

Early Childhood Assistant Principal

World Book Day

On Wednesday, Class 6b brought their favourite childhood books into school and read them to Class 1a for World Book Day.

Dear parents,

From next week, I will be taking a register of children wearing the appropriate clothing for the outdoor and gardening lessons. This term has been very wet and a lot of children have not been turning up in outdoor boots/wellingtons or waterproof clothing. This wastes a huge amount of time and sometimes means they children are unable to take part because of this. I hope you can appreciate this is unacceptable and therefore there will be a consequence.

So from Monday, for classes 3-8, I will be taking a clothing register for every class. If children do not have appropriate footwear, and waterproofs for wet days, they will need to make up the time wasted during Thursday lunchtimes. Please make sure they have separate outdoor shoes for the lesson so that these can be used separately from shoes worn in school. Children will also need to bring their shoes and wellies to the classroom separately and change into them so a separate bag is a good idea.

If there are particular issues with clothing for your child, please email me on the following address so I know in advance, otherwise the rules will apply. [email protected]

NEW Instrument Lessons Support Fund

Learning to play a musical instrument is universally considered to be of inestimable benefit to the holistic development of our young people. At Michael Hall, we offer tuition on a number of instruments and many of our pupils and students have weekly lessons during the school day. This is an extra expense and one that can be challenging to manage. With this in mind, during the Kidbrooke Park Music Festival last October, we asked the audiences for donations towards an Instrumental Lessons Support Fund so that we can provide some support to those struggling to pay fees for these lessons. We were touched by the generosity of those who contributed and are pleased to announce that the fund is now active.

If you wish to apply for the Fund, please read the Terms and Conditions and complete the application form on our Music page. This should then be sent to [email protected]

The policy has been devised with the  balance of the fund in mind. If you would like to contribute to the Fund, please contact Maria Lucas at [email protected]

With best wishes, Julian Rolton. Music Teacher

The Dark is Rising! Class 8a play

Friday 15th and Saturday 16th March, 7pm

Come and see Class 8a’s play The Dark is Rising, based loosely on the Susan Cooper books of the same name.

Entry is by donation, and funds raised will help pay for their class trip to Portugal in June.

The play has been created from scratch, with the script, music, and songs all written for the class.

A synopsis:
As winter sets in, freezing the world around him, young Will Stanton is about to turn thirteen.  Christmas is a few days away, but something feels wrong, and he can’t figure out what.

He is part of a large bustling family, who live in the Oxfordshire countryside, and all seems well outwardly, until his birthday morning.

He reads a mysterious book and discovers a high and magical destiny in his life; he becomes an Old One, an ancient race of The Light, who defend the world against The Dark, headed by their terrible Lord.

The Dark seek to have dominion over the hearts of mankind and rule the earth, and Will must help The Light find a way to achieve a final victory over their menacing Rising.

The rest of Will’s family are unaware of his high calling, but provide a backdrop for other characters to participate, including The Lady of the Light and other helpers, weaving a connection back to Arthurian times and a Lost Land that has passed out of human memory.

We follow the adventure of both sides, in a struggle for final victory, after which a new task faces humanity, one less obvious, but key to the next step in human cultural destiny…

Class 8a Teacher

"Hello, I’m Tara, I live in Germany near Cologne and I attend the Steiner school in Erftstadt. I am very happy that Plaw Hatch Farm has accepted my application to do my 9th grade agriculture internship with them.  So in May of this year, I will to come to Plaw Hatch Farm for four weeks’ work experience. As the farm has no accommodation available on site, the farm and I are looking for accommodation for me nearby, from which I can get to the farm at day times and have a home in the evenings and on the weekends. The period is from 4th of May to 1st of June. I would love to live in a family and get to know the British way of life. If children, especially girls of my age, are living in the family too, this would be perfect, but of course I can image all other options. It is very important for me to find accommodation, because I have been looking forward to my work experience in your country for many months now. A little about myself: I’m 15 years old, I love playing the violine, canoe-polo sports and I love all kinds of craft work and I love animals. It would be wonderful if you could imagine giving me a home for the above period.  If so, please get in touch with me or my parents via e-mail: [email protected] oder via phonecall: 0049 2235 9882334. You can also contact Emma Hams from Plaw Hatch Farm, if you want to know more details about the project via [email protected]. Looking forward to hear from you, sincerely, Tara Fischer"
