1st March 2024

Dear Michael Hall Community,

I have had the privilege this week of watching not one but two fantastic performances given by classes at Michael Hall. Class 12's production of 'Blue Stockings' by Julia Swale was an utterly transformative experience, presenting, as it did, the hugely significant and often troubling challenges facing young female students wishing to gain a qualification from Cambridge at the turn of the last century. Not only was I incredibly impressed by the performances from every individual involved , but I also reflected for a long while afterwards on how incredibly well our young people tackled some enormously political, social and emotional issues with such maturity and respect for the subject matter. I really do hope that they have enjoyed this creative experience as it resulted in a production truly to be proud of.

My second foray this week into the world of theatre came with Class 4a's performance of 'Idunn and the Golden Apples.' Their collaboration in bringing this story to life, with commitment, imagination and humour, was simply a joy to watch. The children performed with such enthusiasm and joy that the audience were completely transported to another time and place as they sang, danced and wove their narrative around us.

This week has not been easy with the collapse of our boiler and the subsequent emergency class relocations that have had to be made. However, my colleagues and, of course, the students have reminded me this week that there is nothing like a crisis to pull a community together. Having these two performances during the week has helped to ground us all in what really matters - the children's education.

My warmest wishes to you all,

Sarah Stokes
Principal

Middle School Boiler

Due to the deterioration and final collapse of not just one but two ancient boiler systems in the school this year, we would welcome some additional financial support to ensure we have adequate heating in place for the students and staff. Any contributions towards the £40,000 cost of replacing this second one would be extremely well received. Please click here for more information.

Learning a musical instrument has profound benefits

At Michael Hall, we offer tuition on a number of musical instruments with a dedicated team of Visting Music Teachers. It is universally recognised that learning to play a musical instrument has profound benefits whatever age we are. For the developing child of school age, the neurological advantages have been proven in numerous studies leading to headlines stating that children who learn a musical instrument generally perform better at school or that musicians have 'super-connected brains'. If you have never had the opportunity to learn a musical instrument yourself, it can be difficult imagining how to support your own child following such a path. The following article posted last month might provide some encouragement and we are always happy to have a conversation.

In the meantime, if you would like to apply for lessons at school, have a look at our Music pages https://www.michaelhall.co.uk/parents/music

With best wishes,

Julian Rolton and Rachel Masters

Seeking accommodation

"Hello, I’m Tara, I live in Germany near Cologne and I attend the Steiner school in Erftstadt. I am very happy that Plaw Hatch Farm has accepted my application to do my 9th grade agriculture internship with them.  So in May of this year, I will to come to Plaw Hatch Farm for four weeks’ work experience. As the farm has no accommodation available on site, the farm and I are looking for accommodation for me nearby, from which I can get to the farm at day times and have a home in the evenings and on the weekends. The period is from 4th of May to 1st of June. I would love to live in a family and get to know the British way of life. If children, especially girls of my age, are living in the family too, this would be perfect, but of course I can image all other options. It is very important for me to find accommodation, because I have been looking forward to my work experience in your country for many months now. A little about myself: I’m 15 years old, I love playing the violine, canoe-polo sports and I love all kinds of craft work and I love animals. It would be wonderful if you could imagine giving me a home for the above period.  If so, please get in touch with me or my parents via e-mail: [email protected] oder via phonecall: 0049 2235 9882334. You can also contact Emma Hams from Plaw Hatch Farm, if you want to know more details about the project via [email protected]. Looking forward to hear from you, sincerely, Tara Fischer"
