Friday Flyer - 22nd October 2026
Dear Michael Hall Community,
I hope that everyone is well and adapting to the noticeably darker mornings, shorter days and a slight drop in temperatures more in keeping with autumn.
I wrote last week about engagement with the wider world and not living an insular life as part of our responsibility as the responsible adult around the children so that we are guiding them towards a world of now and not in any way held back by the shackles of our own past, our (perhaps) outdated and narrow readings, and our own sense of nostalgia – lovely though that is.
This week has been very much one of living in the now as I have been updating policy, ensuring compliance and making sure that we are inspection ready. This is not the most fun aspect of the role, but it is essential in modern schooling to keep the rigging tight at all times; and then to be able to say how you did it, why you do it, show it and show why it all works the way you intended.
Going through this has made me wonder what we would be like if we were completely unshackled to build and run a school. What would we look like? What would we keep that we currently have? What would we change, if anything, in our journey? What would we change in our curriculum content? What would help our pupils feel and be more ready to go out and meet (and hopefully lead) society and the world?
I love the ability to think freely, to be able to consider what could be and not just what is - As my Colleagues know, I like to challenge things.
With my free thinking and being led by my own values, one of the things that would be non-negotiable in an imaginary school, is community and connectedness. Perhaps this is fuelled by one of my latest Ted Talk viewings (which I do not always like as often they present the simple as deeply profound). The talk is given by Johann Hari – Chasing the Scream. From this presentation there is a phrase which sat with me "the opposite of addiction is connection".
As we have seen rising use of screen time, a deterioration of mental health in young people, an increase in misogyny and toxic masculinity, an increase in far left and far right interest from young people, and a polarisation in views in recent times it is clear that young people are looking for a place or people to connect to. What they are not finding is that there are healthy human connections in their daily lives, whereas here at Michael Hall, we do; and it is brilliant!
So, with half term upon us, please enjoy the opportunity to stay connected, make memories, have fun as this will set us all up for a fabulous second half term.
I look forward to greeting you on the gates on the first day back, and to seeing as many of you as possible at the advent events which we will collectively organise and host.
Warm wishes,
Stuart

Oar We Asking Too Much? 🚣
Our Rowing Club loves being out on the water, but when the weather has other ideas, we'd love to keep our young rowers rowing on dry land!
The Gym/Clubs Department is on the lookout for a pre-loved rowing machine in good working order, ideally a Concept2 or similar sturdy model that can withstand the enthusiasm of our students!
It would help pupils build strength, practise their technique and keep their rowing skills shipshape, even when they can't get out on the water.
So, if you have a rowing machine gathering dust, we'd be delighted to give it a new lease of life. Your unused fitness equipment could become someone's favourite part of the school week!
Please contact the school if you have one you'd be happy to donate - [email protected]
Thank you for helping us keep our rowers making waves – even on dry land!

Dear families,
Join us this November for our new Woodland Parent and Child group, a space for families with children aged 0–6 to connect with nature, our community and the changing seasons. Gathering around the fire, we’ll share seasonal songs and stories, warm tea and snacks, enjoy nature crafts and make time for free play in our beautiful Michael Hall woodland. A chance to slow down, explore and enjoy time together outdoors, whatever the weather. Families are warmly invited to join us for a free taster session on Fridays, November 6th or 20th, from 1–3pm. Please e-mail [email protected] to book your place. We look forward to gathering with you by the fire!

Ways to Contribute
If you feel you can help support the Blossom Fund, there are several ways you can give:
- One-off donations
- Standing orders
- Online contributions via our website
- Legacy gifts
- We are also exploring how charitable donations!
Donate Here
Every gift, large or small, will directly help open the doors of a Waldorf education to more children. To put some context, if we had 10 people donating £20 per month, that equates to 10% of a child's fees that we could support.
If you would like to find out more on how to donate, please email [email protected] or contact me directly.

Support your local choral society!! - Our next concert on 15th November is Rossini's masterpiece which he composed near the end of his life.
It's tuneful, as you would expect from a composer that created so many operas, and not particularly solemn!
Rodney, (ex Michael Hall parent) himself an opera singer conducts us, and also doubles as the Bass soloist.
It's a debut performance for Lorraine Doron (Soprano) so we are very much a 'local' event.

CHOIR CLUBS WITH KATE SMITH
Take place on Wednesdays for Class 5.
I will start a Class 4 club on Tuesdays if we get enough interest…
For information and booking please visit the school portal for activities https://michael-hall-school.rafyo.com/activities
Choir club is held in our Eurythmy Studio and is for those children who love singing and want to sing with others who also love singing. We learn lots of lovely songs, and have great fun along the way.
So, I look forward to meeting new children to these clubs, as well as some familiar faces of course!
