Friday Flyer - 26th September 2025

Dear Michael Hall Families,

I am writing in two tenses as I experience parts of the day, look forward to the next part and reflect on the purpose of Michaelmas, then return to my thoughts in writing here. Apologies for my jumping from tense to tense. Our Michaelmas assembly was beautiful. I was moved by the unity across the school and stunned to hear our voices in chorus from class one to class 12, accompanied by our colleagues.

As the warmth of summer gives way to the crispness of autumn (I am certainly feeling that on the gate each morning!), we are gathering to celebrate Michaelmas, one of the many festivals and activities which set the rhythm of the of our academic year – perhaps those who experienced this as pupils are feeling fond memories at this time. This moment in the calendar is not simply a date of observance, but (as I am learning) a living picture that speaks to the heart of our community, our children, and the values we hold together; the awareness of our inner dragons, how we overcome challenges and darker times and how we provide service to help others - which in itself builds fortitude and strength.

Michaelmas falls at the turning point of the seasons and is marked in many school calendars and cultures. The long, sun-filled days have drawn to a close, and the nights grow steadily longer. Nature itself reminds us that the external light is waning, and with that comes the invitation to kindle an inner light – one that can guide us through the darker months ahead. I loved our assembly today which marked this so poignantly with play, song and word.

The story of St. Michael courageously standing against the dragon is not a tale confined to the past. It speaks to timeless qualities of strength, courage, and truthfulness – qualities that we all need, and perhaps especially so in our modern world. For our children, Michaelmas is not presented as dogma or doctrine, but as a living archetype, an image of what it means to meet obstacles with bravery and resilience. As the seasons change, so too do the challenges of growing up, and through the Michaelmas festival, children are given a picture of how to face life with determination and with heart.

I have not seen a school mark this day in the same way as Michael Hall. The activities that pupils engaged in call upon their strength and cooperation, while contributing to the whole community. These celebrations and through pageant, music, work and shared meals (lovely soup!), remind us that courage is not an isolated act but something nurtured in community. We have shown what we value and created a strong reference point for each member of the community.

I hope that all our families enjoy this year’s Michaelmas celebrations. It is a great time to come together, to reflect, and to strengthen the bonds that sustain us. May we each carry forward the courage of Michael into the months ahead, finding light even in the darker days, and supporting one another with warmth and resolve.

Have a joyful weekend.

For October there will be over 100 stalls and we are delighted to welcome  15 additional new stallholders who are attending for the first time. Perhaps you would like to get some early Christmas shopping done or find that unique gift for someone or even yourself? The markets promise to offer all manner of beautiful items from handwoven baskets, clothes, eco beauty products,  jewellery, dried flower wreaths, artwork, cards, toys, glasswork, books, craft kits, homewares, rugs, wooden chopping boards, prints, children's clothing and knits, scarves, sculptures, bags, leatherwork, ceramics, beeswax candles, slippers, pottery, artisan food items and the much relied on winter tonics! For our younger visitors, we have Elfin Grove presenting 'Rapunzel', an enchanting puppet show, see attached poster.

These community events create a wonderful chance to have true craftsmanship brought to you, to meet up with friends, purchase something extra special and to shop locally. The markets are run by a team of volunteers and all money raised from stallholder fees goes solely towards improving opportunities and facilities for our students. We are very happy to welcome our Class 3 Farmers with their apple stall who will be making and selling freshly pressed apple juice alongside other Autumnal bounty, class 8 will be serving the unmissable freshly made waffles in addition to their fundraiser stall and Class 11 will be catering for all our food needs with drinks, cakes and lunch in the canteen.  Parking and entrance is free although please walk if you can or park on a friend's driveway. Kidbrooke Park Music Festival 1st & 2nd November 2025

It's that time of year again when preparations are well under way for our very own KP Music Festival.

The weekend of 1st and 2nd November will see musicians of international recognition perform 3 very different concerts in the Long Room and the Theatre - a very special treat! Not to mention the KP Festival Youth Orchestra, made up of our own students and visiting friends who will join the professional musicians in a spectacular performance of a world premiere by Jeff Moore, An Orkney Winter.

You can find information about the concerts on kpmusicfestival.org where you can also buy tickets for each event. Please do support this annual festival. It exists to introduce children and our wider community into the world of live music.

New Brass Teacher - Richard Cross

Our wonderful brass teacher, Joe Sharpe was offered some incredible work over the summer so has had to curtail his teaching for the time being. Luckily, we are delighted to announce that Richard Cross has agreed to step in and deliver brass lessons at Michael Hall. Richard comes with extensive teaching experience of all the brass instruments and a hugely busy career as a trombonist, conductor and arranger. We need brass players at Michael Hall, so if you would like to sign up your young person for lessons on Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium or French Horn contact Rachel Masters or Julian Rolton. All application forms can be found on https://www.michaelhall.co.uk/parents/music

Celestial Harmonies 5th October

Last February, the Christian Community Church was packed for a concert presented by Michael Hall alumni, Nick Korth and Gregers Brinch. It was amazing to see so many people eager to hear incredible music in Forest Row. On 5th October, we are presenting another event featuring fantastic musicians not only singing and playing their instruments but in one piece singing and playing simultaneously! To be precise: overtone singing. The concert also sees the introduction of a new instrument, the remarkable Harmonic Steel Spiral. Details are on the poster in the classified section below; do book early.

In Autumn there are things that we can do to build soil for next year. This a time when the earth breathes in and worms are very busy.

Two of my top tips at this time of year is to sow green manures and to apply compost to empty garden beds.

Green manure: is a term for plants whose role is to feed the soil with their life force and biomass. In autumn, a mixture of Vetch and Rye grass with germinate in cooler weather, I like to add legumes like Sainfoin and Field beans. These form a green cover over winter and can be terminated in spring.

Compost: compost applied as a cover for the beds over winter will be home for a host of insects, it will be broken down to a fine crumb once spring arrives. Perfect for early planting.

I will be selling squash by the mansion gates on Thursdays 3-3.30pm

If you'd like to join our garden group and enjoy all these wonderful vegetables then please follow the invitation link:

Fundraising for The School Garden

We love growing great quality Biodynamic food for the school and community. If you love to receive it and would like to help us with developing the garden, then please consider donating to help us continue to grow. All donations go directly to the garden.

One of our tunnels has aged and torn, it needs reskinning and modernising. In the tunnels we grow, Tomatoes, Sweet and Chilli Peppers, Aubergines, Melons, Cucumbers, Celery, Basil, and Salads. If everyone on the group gave £20, we'd have enough money to get the tunnel repaired and we can continue to produce some of the best vegetables in the South East
