Theory U Interviews

Update Friday 5th August

The Dialogue Interview phase of our co-creating process concluded as scheduled on the 20th July. Our committed group of 19 interviewers conducted 61 interviews with both current and ex parents and members of staff amongst others; wrote down the images and experiences which emerged from their conversations; and emailed it all to us for collating. All this anonymized feedback was then merged in one single document of which hard copies have been  printed and distributed to the seven people who will participate in the Analysis/ Crystallization phase of the process. Our warmest appreciation goes once again to all interviewers and interviewees for their dedication and willingness to help paint a picture of where Michael Hall stands at present. Looking at ourselves as an organization through the eyes of parents, staff and the wider community is the first step in this exciting journey to create together the best future for Michael Hall.

Ursula Versteegen came back to Michael Hall on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th July. She had a chance to read some of the feedback which had already been submitted by the interviewers so she could best appreciate how the picture of the school was evolving. During her visit, she mainly worked with the steering group in order to guide us through the planning of the next stages of the co-creating process. Her visit was extremely inspiring and helpful. Ursula also met with a few interviewers who shared their interview experiences as well as having a chance to practise some of the techniques which will be used for the analysing of the data collected in the dialogue interviews. We thank the interviewers who were able to join us at very short notice!

The Analysis/ Crystallization phase will take place from Monday 8th August for 3 or 4 days by a group including: Liz Attwell, Mark Westoll, Davina Skinner, Anita Hempenius, Simon Grimshaw, Mignon Manning and Jeronima Garcia.

The outcome of the analysis will be one of the elements which will inform the staff work days on the 5th and 6th September.

Update Friday 8th July

This has been a busy week with plenty of conversations/ interviews  taking place all around us while we articulate our experiences of Michael Hall. We had a great response to our request for people willing to share their picture of the school during this phase of the Theory U process. Around 53 Dialogue Interviews are being carried out by 20 generous interviewers. All areas of the school community are being covered, including parents, teachers, admin staff, council, old scholars, ex parents, ex members of staff etc. Parallel to these Dialogue Interviews, all members of Michael Hall staff are also conducting Stakeholders Interviews which also cover pupils, parents and third parties. If you want more information on any of these types of interviews, visit the school website: http://www.michaelhall.co.uk/theory-u-interviews

In August, a small group of Theory U “enthusiasts” will sort through all your anonymous contributions in order to build a picture of Michael Hall and enter into the upward side of our own school's U process.

We are also planning to have an event on Saturday 1st October in which the whole community will be invited to share in the picture that is building up of the possible future of Michael Hall. Please look out for more details closer to the time.

Thank you all for your support. Enjoy the summer break and see you back here in September for more updates!

Older Updates

From 15th-17th of June Dr Ursula Versteegen, a close colleague of Otto Scharmer and co-creator of the Theory U process, came to work with the school. With her came Peter Steinle, the Director of a school in Hamburg that has been working with Ursula for three years.

They met with a range of stakeholders in the school from SMT, Council, and staff. Ursula conducted interview training with the thirty parents and staff able to free themselves for the work. The plan is that all the interviews will go towards creating a picture of the school that will be worked with before school starts, on September 5th and 6th. We intend that this picture will begin a process that will inform the vision and development of the school.

In addition, Ursula addressed the whole staff and did a listening exercise. She has suggested that the staff also conduct three or four slightly different interviews, called stakeholder interviews, the results of which they would bring to the workdays in September. We are working on them at the moment. Please be open to being approached. Ursula will work with us to try to ensure the best possible process; the steering group feel that her twenty years of experience will be an invaluable resource. Time is a bit short and It may be that we end up as the most interviewed portion of humanity on the planet! Please bear with us as we try to take a large organisation through a process to increase its self-awareness.

The dialogue interviews started in earnest on the 28th June. They are up to 90 minutes long, in depth, one-to-one conversations within the framework of 7 questions which will facilitate the gathering of information. We have a total of 20 interviewers which include parents, teachers, admin staff and also people from outside the school. Thank you to all of them for attending the interview training day with Ursula on the 16th June and for generously offering so much of their time and energy to do this for the school. In August, a small group of Theory U “enthusiasts” will sort through all your anonymous contributions in order to build a picture of Michael Hall and enter into the upward side of our own school's U process.

The stakeholder interviews are also happening now and all members of staff have been asked to conduct 4 different interviews based on a different set of questions. They will interview a colleague, a parent, a pupil and a fourth person of their choice. All the feedback from these conversations will be brought together during two staff work-days to be held on the 5th and 6th September

We are also planning to have an event on Saturday 1st October in which the whole community will be invited to share in the picture that is building up of the possible future of Michael Hall. Please look out for more details closer to the time.
