Walled garden gets unblemished organic certification

“A very interesting example of a diversified, locally adapted Bio-Dynamic market garden.”

That was the conclusion reached by the Inpsectors from Demeter who came to check the walled garden here at Michael Hall as part of their certification programme.

Demeter is an voluntary international organisation which certifies growers who offer organic and biodynamic produce. It is the only ecological association that has built up a network of individual certification organisations world-wide. In 1997 Demeter-International was founded for closer co-operation in the legal, economic and spiritual spheres. Presently Demeter International has 16 members from Demeter organisations from Europe, America, Africa and New Zealand, representing around 4.200 producers in 43 countries.

The body of their report is reproduced in full below:

“The inspector was impressed by the quality of the crops on view despite a harsh winter and cold spring. The extent of the bio-diversity in your system, including green manures and managed weeds as well as cultivated crops was also noted.

You have a clear understanding of the need for feeding the soil in the garden in relation to your soil type and the intensiveness of the cropping. The inspector commented on the quality of the finished home-made compost and it is apparent that you have a good system for making and using compost.

It is very good that you are saving and using your own strains of seed. This is an important way to hold the biodynamic impulse on the site. The inspector reported that your biodynamic preparations are consistently storing well and that you are recording their use closely throughout the season. Also that there has been a positive effect observed from using BD 500 in dry conditions which is very interesting to note. Your regular use of BD 501 is commendable. You have reported success with regulating pests with the use of the biodynamic measures that is good to hear, including teas made from compost and nettle. You are also using BD Max to good effect.

Your training of horticulturists through school visits, gardening workshops and teaching workshops is a valuable service that you provide.

You are selling all your produce locally which is ideal, as well as providing for the internal catering at the school.

You had no non-compliances and we are delighted to grant Demeter Certification for this year.”
